We believe community gardening is good for every neighborhood! As part of our efforts to strengthen community gardens throughout Florida, in 2010 Green Florida (now Garden Florida) launched its Member Garden Network with the goal of helping community gardens in Florida save money and access the resources they need to be sustainable.
Our Garden Network members have all adopted Garden Florida’s three core values:
Respecting Individuals Garden Florida and our member gardens are committed to treating people with respect both inside and outside the organization. Garden Florida and our member gardens are committed to not discriminating based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, religion, class, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression or age.
Protecting the Environment Garden Florida gardens use organic and other sustainable practices that conserve water, soil and other natural resources. Our gardens prioritize the use of Florida native plants for ornamental plantings as the best plant material for conserving Florida’s unique ecosystem.
Strengthening Communities Garden Florida strengthens communities through community organizing, with the goal of broad-based community engagement in creating a green economy.
Every garden has different ways of living out these three values. Check out the Core Principles tabs within each garden's page to see stories about their projects aimed at respecting individuals, protecting the environment and strengthening community.
One of the most expensive things community gardens have to pay for each year is liability insurance. Garden Florida offers our Garden Network Members the opportunity to obtain liability insurance coverage for their gardens through our umbrella policy. Available specifically to our members through our partnership with the Land Trust Alliance, this liability policy offers protection from claims by people not associated with your garden, as well as a small amount of coverage for medical care for a garden’s own volunteers if someone is injured while working at your garden. The application for joining our insurance policy is available through a link here on this page. Contact Andrea Hildebran Smith at 727-643-7189 for more information about making your community garden a member of our network and our umbrella liability insurance policy.
Members of our Garden Network also get to use the tools available on this website:
1) Web pages for detailed descriptions of your garden, photos, logo, contact information.
2) A database for keeping contact information on you members, as well as tracking who has signed your waiver and who has paid their annual dues.
3) A place to post news, events and photo galleries within your web pages that also notifies your membership via email of updates.
4) A place for your gardens registered users to download your rules of operation, liability waiver forms, or other garden documents, as well as posting your location and times for planning meetings.
5) Statewide visibility for your garden as part of Garden Florida's communications with our statewide online newsletter.
Garden Florida's goal is to support community gardens by reducing costs and providing tools to help streamline the basic administrative tasks that each of us are managing on our own. There are many ways we can envision providing services regionally and statewide over the coming years to continue to meet this goal as we grow.
